AWS Cloud for Digital Education: UNINETTUNO’s Evolution

The client and the context

TheInternational Telematic University UNINETTUNO is one of Italy’s leading digital universities and offers online educational programs to students around the world. The e-learning platform is at the heart of the educational experience and provides continuous access to educational content, video lectures, and digital services.

In an environment characterized by steady growth in the number of users and an increase in the volume of digital resources to manage, the University has chosen to invest in a cloud strategy capable of ensuring scalability, reliability, and the ability to innovate over time.

The partnership with VMEngine was established precisely with this goal in mind and has evolved over the years, supporting the University as it has progressively matured its ecosystem AWS.

The challenge

The first priority was to modernize the technological infrastructure supporting the e-learning platform, improving its ability to accommodate the growing number of students, content, and services delivered online.

As the project has evolved and cloud environments have expanded, new needs have emerged related to AWS infrastructure governance, security management, access control, and cost optimization.

The goal was therefore twofold:

  • ensure a scalable and highly available digital platform;
  • Build a cloud governance model capable of supporting future growth in a secure, controlled, and efficient manner.

The VMEngine Solution

VMEngine has partnered with UNINETTUNO on a multi-phase transformation process.

As a first step, the University modernized its e-learning platform by adopting AWS services, resulting in an infrastructure that is more flexible and resilient and capable of effectively managing the fluctuating workloads typical of online education.

Subsequently, as cloud environments became more complex, the project evolved toward the implementation of a multi-account AWS model, designed to improve governance and operational management of the entire ecosystem.

Adopting this approach has made it possible to:

  • separate the areas according to operational needs;
  • strengthen access control and authorization;
  • centralize resource monitoring;
  • improve visibility into AWS usage and costs;
  • Apply security and governance policies consistently.

Thanks to this evolution, UNINETTUNO now has a cloud infrastructure designed not only to support current needs but also to support future innovation.
