12Print.it: AWS Cloud Migration for Digital Printing

The client and the context

12Print.it is a leading European company in digital printing. Specifically, it specializes in printing digital photos, customizing photo gadgets, and creating photo books. Founded in a garage on the outskirts of Naples, 12Print.it has become the undisputed leader in the industry, offering over 1,000 customizable products and more than 500 different print formats and media.

Among the many awards we have received, we would like to highlight the following:

  • Altro Consumo – Consumers’ Association “Best Buy” Award

  • Ranked 2nd best online digital printing website by Computer Bild magazine

  • Rating: 7.1 in *Internet Magazine*

  • Aicel-Certified Store – Italian E-Commerce Association

And, as if that weren’t enough, it is a media partner of:Microsoft, Google Picasa, Fotolia, Big Brother Photos, Fondazione, BioParco di Roma, andGazzetta di Parma.

In this case study, we’ll describe our cloud migration journey, which we carried out in collaboration with VMEngine.

The challenge

The company’s strong presence on search engines—thanks to careful SEO efforts and “word of mouth” drivenby high customer satisfaction—has led this small business to grow rapidly, to the point where it now has over 100,000 registered customers and generates approximately 600,000 page views per month.

There was a need to grow further, both in terms of data and in terms of the features to offer customers. These needs led management to consider the right steps to take and the right investments to make.

They should have invested in dedicated connectivity, several terabytes of storage, and upgrades to their web servers.

The VMEngine Solution for Migration to the AWS Cloud

The migration carried out by VMEngine for 12Print.it has enabled the online digital printing portal to adopt a more scalable, high-performance infrastructure that is better suited to handling traffic spikes.

The proposed and implemented solution involved migrating to the AWS Cloud and, in this specific case, was carried out using the following services:

  • ELB – Elastic Load Balancing across two Availability Zones

  • EC2 EBS boot as a web server, database server, and processing server

  • Auto Scaling Policy for the web server group

  • S3 for client galleries

  • CloudFront to speed up the download of static content

  • SES – Simple Email Service for email communications and newsletters

  • SNS – Simple Notification Service for notifications regarding the solution’s activities and warnings

Benefits

The use of Amazon Web Services data centers, distributed around the globe, offers enormous potential in terms of bandwidth and storage capacity scalabilitycost-effectively and without any upfront investment.

The ability to request additional capacity by automatically launching new web server instances (during traffic peaks) and, similarly, to free up those resources by automatically shutting them down during periods of lower usage, has led to significant cost efficiencies for the service. This is a strategic advantage that has made it possible to improve and streamline business processes.

The monitoring and alerting services, along with the associated policies, have made the solution provided by VMEngine to the customer exceptionally reliable.

“Our infrastructure had become a bottleneck for our growth objectives. Since we were unable to invest in new equipment and expensive connectivity contracts—which are often difficult to obtain in the Campania region—the solution proposed by VMengine allowed us to create a scalable, high-performance infrastructure with pay-as-you-go costs that were significantly lower than those of other proposals that simply involved an expansion.”
