Vodafone Drive: The "Infinite" Storage is on the AWS Cloud
The client and the context
A 100% Made in Italy company that, since 2013— the year it was founded, has been providing an effective, visually appealing file-sharing solution for the secure sharing and management of documents both within and outside the corporate network—namely, LiveBox, which specializes in software development and provides solutions tailored to businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to communicate, share, and synchronize information in a simple and secure manner.
The challenge
The LiveBox project for Vodafone required a variety of professionals. The company was already a customer of Amazon Web Services but, especially during the startup phase, there was a need to outsource the design and implementation of the infrastructure, as well as its maintenance and updates, to experts who were thoroughly familiar with the Amazon Web Services platform.
This is where VMEngine, a Reseller and Consulting Partner of Amazon Web Services. The company’s specialists were involved in the design and implementation of the infrastructure. “We didn’t know what kind of architecture and machines to use,” explains Federico di Nuzzo, head of marketing. – primarily based on the expected traffic workload for Vodafone Drive. The specialists at VMEngine analyzed a “typical” scenario, attempting to replicate the load that the infrastructure would have experienced once it went live, in order to test the scalability it required.
The VMEngine Solution for Migration to the AWS Cloud
To address the challenges posed by the large volume of data to be stored and the need for scalability due to irregular access patterns, VMEngine’s technical experts recommended adopting an S3 bucket for storing user data and an Elastic File System (EFS) for files to be shared among instances. User traffic is managed by an Elastic Load Balancing. We ensure high reliability with two front-end instances, while auto-scaling kicks in when needed. To support this, we’ve set up two additional dedicated instances forLDAP authentication and an OpenOffice server for editing documents. Finally, given the volume of data the database must handle, the VMEngine team recommended using anAurora RDS instance.
Finally, to allow customers to test their software before making any releases, we have created a staging environment that is identical to the production environment.
